Dear friends,
On Saturday, the 10th of October, the Czech Republic became the sole country preventing the Lisbon Treaty from taking effect. This is so in spite of the fact that both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic have approved the treaty. It is so simply because the President of the Czech Republic keeps refusing to sign it. We want to assure you that Mr. Klaus does not act and speak on our behalf. In defiance of the decision of the representative bodies and the Government of the Czech Republic, he is pushing his private view of the matter. His reason for not signing it, which he announced at the last moment, is but one of his many attempts to rationalize his aversion to European integration. As citizens of the Czech Republic, we want to play our part in the responsible and critical shaping of European policy. The approval of the Lisbon Treaty seems to be the first step towards this goal. We are therefore ashamed of Mr. Klaus' behaviour.
